On 15 August 1961, nineteen-year-old East German policeman Conrad Schumann jumped over a barbed-wire barrier into West Berlin. The Berlin Wall was only beginning to take shape, and photographer Peter Leibing captured the split second when uncertainty became a decision. This design recalls the famous “Leap into Freedom”: one young man in motion, the border beneath him and the divided city watching. It remains a powerful image of fear, courage and the human desire to choose one’s own future.
